September 10, 1961

On this day, Chief Samuel Ladoke Akintola, the Premier of the Western Region, was, on this day, at the Ibadan Railway station to meet the Governor-General of the Federation, Dr. Namdi Azikwe, who was passing through the Regional capital, Ibadan, on his way to Eastern Nigeria on a short visit. The Governor-General’s train arrived at the station at 7.30 pm and was met by Chief Akintola and two of his ministers – Oba C.D. Akran and Chief J.A.O. Odebiyi, as well as senior government officials including the acting secretary to the Premier, Mr. T.O. Ejiwunmi.

September 10, 1967

On this day, Chief Anthony Enahoro, Federal Commissioner for Information, told newsmen in Lagos, that Dr. Wole Soyinka was in good health and had a doctor of his choice. He disclosed this when the newsmen made enquiry about the safety and health of Soyinka, the head of Department of Drama at the University of Ibadan, who was in detention. He explained that Wole Soyinka was being detained for questioning by the CID on security matters.

Dr. Wole Soyinka had been arrested in August, a few weeks after the civil war started, on the accusation of conspiracy with the Biafra rebels.
