Tragedy struck on this day at a village near Ilesha, Oyo state when four of a six-member family died after having a breakfast of pounded yam and mushroom soup.

After the meal at their Ajido village home, Etiomi, near Ilesha, all the six members of the family became unconscious and were taken to the Wesley Guild Hospital, Ilesha, where they were later confirmed dead.

According to reports from the hospital, four persons that died were two women – wives of the family’s bread winner, and two young girls, their daughters. The family of six was reported to have complained of stomachaches after the particular day’s breakfast. At the hospital, they were initially placed on the danger list before the four of them gave up the ghost.

The specialist and acting superintendent in charge of the hospital, Dr. V.J. Hartfield, said the incident was not unusual. He said medical examination on the deceased persons showed that there was nothing suspicious about the incident.

The Divisional Police Officer, an Assistant Superintendent of Police, in charge of Ilesha Division, Mr. O. Ibiam, said police could only act on the medical report of the specialist.

While the bodies of the dead family members were released by the hospital for burial, one of the remaining two victims was said to be responding favorably to treatment.
